An Intro to the BMW X3

BMW has been producing the X3, which it refers to as one of its Sports Activity Vehicles, or SAVs, for almost two decades now. That's been more than enough time to forge a reputation as a well-rounded compact luxury crossover. It's muscular with a poised ride and handling, a roomy interior, and an easy-to-use infotainment system. Most recently, the X3 received more standard features, including driver safety aids and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The standard engine on the BMW X3 SAV is a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder (I4) with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Not only is this engine remarkable for everyday driving, but it accelerates at a 0-to-60 mph time of just six seconds. The eight-speed automatic transmission to which the engine is attached provides smooth yet prompt shifts, and it includes Sport and Manual shift modes for a more exciting driving feel and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for more convenient shifts.

For even more acceleration power, go with the performance-optimized M40i. This trim level has a beefier, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter I6 with an output of 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. The 0-to-60 mph time is 4.4 seconds. In addition, the M40i gets a stiffer suspension for a sportier ride.

From Edwardsville to Highland, you'll feel the power and connection to the road.

The BMW X3 has standard rear-wheel drive. With the engine in the front and its power pushed to the rear wheels, the X3 has a nice front-to-back weight distribution that maximizes its handling. There's the option of going with an all-wheel drive system by going with the xDrive30i model (instead of the base sDrive30i) to optimize tire grip on slippery surfaces. Peak fuel economy on the BMW X3 is 25 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which is great for a small luxury SUV.

Advanced Technology

The BMW X3 has the iDrive 6.0 system, which-in addition to the previously mentioned Apple CarPlay-combines infotainment features such as a 12-speaker stereo system with HD Radio, a few months of SiriusXM Radio, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 10.2-inch touchscreen.

Accompanying the iDrive system is a touchpad controller, which functions as a secondary way of executing infotainment functions. There's a pair of USB ports for hooking up mobile devices to play content or charge them, and there's a 5.7-inch instrument cluster that displays driver information.

With proximity keyless entry, you can unlock the doors by just having the key fob on you, and there's a push button in the cabin for starting the engine instead of using an ignition key.

A panoramic moonroof is added on the M40i.

Driver assistance on the BMW X3 is provided by the vehicle's Active Driving Assistant bundle, which-in addition to adaptive cruise control-consists of frontal collision warning with pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection with lane departure warning, and lane departure warning. There's also a rearview camera for video monitoring when performing low-speed maneuvers in reverse, and it comes with front and rear parking sensors for audible alerts if you're getting too close to someone. However, if there's a crash, the X3 can deploy any of its six airbags, consisting of two frontal impact airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags.

Accompanying the airbags is BMW Assist eCall, which includes an SOS button to press for immediate emergency assistance.

Confidence comes standard no matter where your next adventure takes you in St. Louis.

Trim Levels

The BMW X3 is split into three trim levels, which are the sDrive30i, xDrive30i, and the M40i.
