The New BMW iX M60
As sleek and powerful as the BMW iX is, BMW wanted to add more to this SUV, so they created the M60 trim. The BMW iX M60 is the performance variant of the BMW iX, and although there is little to distinguish it from the base model visually, this new trim receives more power and an electric motor to boot.
Performance
Being released in the summer of 2022, the iX M60 is the latest performance electric vehicle from BMW, and it's the second EV to be released under its racing-inspired M banner. It will feature an all-wheel-drive system and two electric motors (one under each axle) when it does release. When its Sport mode drive function is activated, these electric motors will produce 610 horsepower, and when its Launch Control is activated, it will produce 811 pounds of torque. With this kind of power, the iX M60 can reach 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and top out at 155 miles per hour.
Interior & Exterior Features
As mentioned, the M60 isn't all that different in terms of visuals compared to the base model. But there are some subtle design changes. To start, there are Blue, M-branded brake calipers that peer out behind its unique 22-inch wheels, as well as black M logos on the rear hatch. Several amenities inside the cabin also help separate this trim, like BMW's speech and gesture control system, a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, and a heated steering wheel and seats.
Distance & Charge Time
Instead of a traditional engine, the BMW iX M60 utilizes a massive 111.5kWh battery to run its two electric motors. This trim can get up to 280 miles of range on a single charge by using such a powerful battery. Although this vehicle can reach a good drive range, its larger battery means it will have a larger charge time.
BMW says when plugged into an amp that delivers a 50kW charge, it can go from 10 percent to 80 percent battery life in about 97 minutes. However, when plugged into an amp that delivers 100 kW of power, that time gets reduced to 49 minutes. And at a DC fast-charge station, where each stand outputs 250kW of power, it can go from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes.
Safety & Technology
In terms of safety features and technology, the M60 incorporates the same features as the base trim. However, while the base trim of the iX has adaptive air suspension as an optional feature, in the M60 trim, it comes standard and is paired with a double-wishbone structure upfront and a multilink suspension at the rear.
The air suspension also uses electronically controlled shock absorbers and is able to adjust its height depending on speed and load on each wheel. The height can also be controlled using a button on the center console, and the drive modes can alter the damper mapping to adjust the handling and ride quality of the M60.
BMW also expects to introduce a suite of new software and advanced driver aids. This new tech will use its enhanced computing power to run its autonomous driving and self-parking features.
BMW's Electric Future
Starting at around $106,000, the BMW iX M60 is just the first in a long line of new EVs coming out in the next few years. This year alone, the company is releasing a new electric sedan, and by 2030 it expects to reach a goal of 50% in its electric sales.
The future is looking bright for BMW and their electric models, so if you want to be a part of it, come check out this vehicle at Newbold BMW when it releases later this June.
